Women’s Centre at Punjabi University

Patiala: University Grants Commission (UGC) has given its nod for setting up of a Centre for Women’s Studies and Development in Punjabi University. Jaspal Singh, Vice Chancellor of the University, said that the entire exercise will be scripted keeping in mind the issue of empowering women at the grassroot level, generation and dissemination of information on gender issues and sensitising the society about the injustice meted out to the womenfolk.
 
Singh also said that UGC has allotted a sum of Rs 5 lakh during the first year, for establishing the Women’s Centre. He further mentioned the amount will be spent in purchasing equipment, conducting seminars and workshops, organizing short-term courses and carrying out community outreach programmes. The main purpose of setting up the centre is to raise gender consciousness, equip women with essential knowledge and skills and motivate them towards thinking and reflecting on crucial issues of everyday life.
