University of Madras (UOM), popularly known as Madras University, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is one of the three oldest universities in India. Madras University was established following a public petition dated 11th November, 1839. Later in January 1840, the University Board was constituted with Mr. George Norton as its President. It offers a variety of programmes at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level at the University's campus as well as the affiliated Institutions spread over the district of Chennai, Thrivallur and Kanchipuram.
