New Delhi: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on November 27, 2009, i.e. Friday organized a seminar on Sanskrit, which also marked the formal launch of its online certificate programme in the language.
The one-day seminar was organized by IGNOU's School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-Disciplinary Studies (SOITS). As per sources, the online certificate programme, offered in collaboration by IGNOU and Chinmaya International Foundation (CIF), has already started.
According to a statement made by V N Rajasekharan Pillai, IGNOU Vice Chancellor, the University has plans to launch several advanced programmes in Indology and Vedanta as well as certificate programmes in other Indian languages. He also added that there is a dire need to revamp Sanskrit education and that, Sanskrit scholars should learn English to spread the language.
Mr Pillai further mentioned that Sanskriti (culture) and Sanskrit are inter-linked. Without an understanding of Sanskrit, it is not possible to understand Indian culture and Ayurveda, said Shrivastava. He also stressed upon the relevance of preserving Indian heritage and culture for economic development of the country.
