New Delhi: Delhi will have a technical university for women, making it the first Indian state to have such an exclusive institution. The news was confirmed by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, in a press meet held recently. She declared that the present technical college — Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), which is currently a part of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIP) — would soon be upgraded into a full-grown university.
As per sources, the Delhi Cabinet has approved the draft of Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University Bill, 2012, which will now be presented before the Assembly's budget session. While discussing about this soon-to-be-established university, Dikshit said that IGIT has achieved a level of maturity and has made major contribution to the growth of quality technical education and research amongst women during the last 12 years.
She added, since 85% seats in the institute are reserved for Delhi girls, it has given better placement and career opportunities for them. Therefore, now it is the time to upgrade this technical institute to meet the growing needs of the industry for relevant technology and product innovation. Moreover, it will also facilitate additional enrolment of women in technological courses as parents are often reluctant to send their daughters outside Delhi for higher education.
Dikshit further said that by incepting the new change, the student strength will increase to almost two times the current strength, in the next few years. Furthermore, a senior technical education official informed that the upgradation of the institute would serve as an opportunity for accelerated growth of women in technical education, technology incubation and product innovation vital for women empowerment.
