IP University OBC Aspirants in Dilemma

New Delhi: OBC aspirants who had applied in Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) and Delhi College of Engineering - now Delhi Technical University (DTU) are in dilemma. Neither these universities have announced the number of seats to be reserved for the OBC category, nor are they calling any OBC candidate for counselling even though the admission process for the general category is set to begin. GGSIPU new counselling schedule can be accessed from the website: www.ipu.ac.in.

Last year the first phase of 27% OBC quota was implemented in most educational institutions, but GGSIPU and DTU are still waiting for a nod from the Delhi government. Only after the enactment of the Delhi Educational Institutes (Reservation in Admissions) Bill 2009, the decision regarding the number of seats to be reserved for OBC candidates will be taken for the session 2009. However, due to the delay, these universities are forced to start the counselling process without the OBC candidates as the new session is likely to begin from the first week of August.

Faculty of Technology in Delhi University (DU), which conducted the admissions in DCE till it became DTU and Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology, is looking forward to the government’s instructions for executing the OBC quota prior to the starting of the new session. Professor S K Singh, Dean, FoT, said that a separate result was declared for the OBC candidates in hope of the quota implementation. He also said that the OBC admissions will then be done by increasing the seats over and above the present number. Meanwhile, the admissions for the general category will start as the new session begins on August 1.

Moreover, the wait for the OBC candidates, seems endless. GGSIPU had earlier deferred the counselling for various courses because the decision on the bill was still pending. However, it is now starting the counselling for the general category from July 10 to 14. Pradeep Upmanyu, Deputy Registrar, also said that it is still uncertain that whether to implement the entire 27% OBC quota this year or in phases. It is expected that the situation will be clear in the next 10 days. Moreover, can’t delay with the counselling further as it is required to start the new session on time.
