Assam Seeks to Set Up AMU Centre

If all goes according to the plan, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) may soon branch out to the north-eastern state of Assam. The Assam government has sent a proposal to AMU asking the centrally-funded university to set up a regional centre in the state. Tarun Gogoi, the chief minister of Assam, has requested the HRD ministry to take the necessary steps in this regard.

AMU has received Rs. 25 crore each for setting up centres in West Bengal and Kerala by the Union government. According to officials, plans are in the pipeline for Bihar, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh to have their regional AMU centres. The government has provided 250-acre land, free of cost, for the upcoming AMU centre in Kishanganj district, Bihar.

Abdul Azis, the vice chancellor of AMU, states that the idea behind setting up special centres is to provide the most educationally deprived social class easy access to modern education. The government hopes to build upon the reach of deprived classes to good education with the building up of these regional centres.
