BCI Says No Entry For Foreign Lawyers

New Delhi: The Law Ministry, in its latest press release, has repeated that the Bar Council of India (BCI) has denied the entry of foreign lawyers in India. According to the press release, the said decision is being subject to a more detailed and rational scrutiny in the light of the opinions and points of view of different stakeholders.
 
The Law Ministry told that the decision of not permitting foreign lawyers in India has been taken in a reply to numerous representations on the subject. Moreover, according to the statement from the Law Ministry, the BCI, which is concerned with the safeguard the rights, privileges and interests of advocates, is committed to take steps which will benefit the Indian legal profession.
 
In addition, in another statement issued by the ministry said that the BCI has informed that it identifies the Indian legal profession to be both service oriented as well as based on business principles. However, it is important to understand legal profession in the Indian context, statement added.
 
The Indian lawyers are not averse to self-up gradation and skill acquisition at the same time. Once the process of legal reform is commenced, the profession could be affirmed to be in some readiness to the opening up of the legal sector, according to the statement.
 
Moreover, the ministry said that this is a matter which is to be considered by the BCI, which is presently laying a clear road map for the purpose of ensuring legal reforms, so, that even the entry of foreign lawyers would cause no serious concern.
