New Delhi: The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The MoU has been signed to create an electronic registry of students. The move has been taken in order to reduce problems like fake degrees.

As per sources, HRD Ministry Joint Secretary Amit Khare and UIDAI Deputy Director General Anil Kachi signed the MoU. The MoU was signed in the presence of HRD Minister Kapil Sibal and UIDAI Chairman Nandan Nilekani. An HRD Ministry statement said that unique identity number is to be based on an individual's demographic and biometric data.

HRD Ministry officials said that UID numbers would help make the education system more accountable in areas ranging from implementing mid-day meal scheme to nailing fake degrees. In addition, the Ministry statement said that HRD Ministry would cooperate with the UIDAI in conducting proof of concept studies, pilots to test the technology and process of enrolment into the UID database and identify registrars to implement the project.

As per sources, the planned registry is expected to be helpful in tracking students' mobility from primary and elementary level through secondary and higher education as also between institutions.
