Jamia Millia Islamia Is Facing Turmoil Due to Fundamentalist Forces: Arjun Singh

New Delhi: Intrinsic turbulence seems to rise in the precinct of Jamia Millia Islamia University. The picture is clear, because former HRD Minister Arjun Singh wrote about the prevailing turmoil in Jamia Millia Islamia to the PM. He has expressed his concern that the prestigious institution might fall in to the hands of fundamentalists.

A conservative Muslim group has been demanding to change the ongoing secular picture of Jamia Millia Islamia. They are also averse to the demand of 27% reservation for OBCs in the institution. Their demand is backed by this argument that the university was established with the particular aim of promoting the cultural and educational advancement of Muslims in India.

However, any consideration by the government at this juncture of time does not seem to be possible, as it is unlikely that the Jamia Act will be amended. PM has expressed his fear in the matter that these activities are backed by a member of the Union Council of Ministers. Jamia Millia Islamia was founded in 1987. The then chancellor Khurshid Alam Khan had made every effort to make it a pro-Muslim institution, from its administration to reservation and preference for a particular group, but all his efforts were turned down by the then cabinet committee.
