UGC Mulls Single Admission Test For Law Schools

New Delhi: On Wednesday i.e. on April 21, 2010, Union Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily announced that University Grants Commission (UGC) is considering a proposal to introduce a single entrance test for admissions into law schools across the nation.
 
In addition, the Union Ministry of Law and Justice is also planning to classify all existing law schools in India according to the standards set by the ministry. These initiatives are adopted by the government as an effort to bring legal education in India in synchrony with the current global trends.
 
Mr Moily mentioned that the proposals for the common entrance test would be discussed at a two day national consultation on Second Generation Reform in Legal Education. The discussion for the finalization of a proposal for an updated legal education system in the country would be held on May 1 and 2 and will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
 
He also said that subjects that will be covered in the discussion would be to make out major challenges that the legal education system is facing today as well as necessary changes that need to be incorporated in Indian legal education, trade, commerce and industry so as to meet the necessities of the Bar Council of India (BCI) and to enable the legal education to have global outreach.
