Cotton College to Get University Status

Guwahati: On July 20, 2011, the Assam Assembly collectively has passed the Cotton College State University Bill. The passing of the bill has paved the way for upgrading the state's oldest (110-year-old) college into a teaching, affiliating, and residential university.

Sources have informed that the new university shall include faculties of Arts, Science, Law, Medicine, Technology, Agriculture, Business Administration, Mass Communication, Engineering, Indian Fine Arts, Commerce and other such faculties as may be prescribed by statutes.

While proposing the Bill, Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government wanted to upgrade the college into a university to enable it to widen its academic scope. He also informed that the bill had been introduced in accordance with the announcement made by the chief minister.

The Cotton College State University Bill states that the jurisdiction of the university would be throughout the state, and Chief Minister (CM) of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, will be the Chancellor of the University. The bill also states that the existing Cotton College would be a constituent college and offer undergraduate (UG) and degree-level education at the same campus.
