IIT-B Acknowledges Alumnus for Designing the Rupee Symbol

Bangalore: The Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) on its 52nd Foundation Day acknowledges its faculty and alumni. As per sources, this year, the institute introduced the Young Alum Award and presented it to Uday Kumar, who had designed the rupee symbol for India. 

Chief guest Gopalkrishna Gandhi, chairman of the Dandi Memorial Committee, presented the awards at the Victor Menezes Convention Centre on Thursday i.e. on March 10, 2011. Devang Khakhar, director of the institute has said that with more and more young people achieving new heights they decided build their links with them and recognize their achievements.

In addition, IIT-B has also presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Professor Dipan Ghosh, who has spent more than 35 years at the institute. Some of the other awardees were Dr Jayant Sathye, senior scientist and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, US, for his outstanding contribution to research in the areas of climate change and renewable energy. Dr Roop Jyoti, vice-chairman, Jyoti Group of Business, Nepal, was presented an award for entrepreneurial achievements and contributions to public service.

Besides, the award, which was constituted in 2001 for retired faculty, has not been given for the last three years because no faculty member has retired.
