New Delhi: Medical Council of India, also known as MCI, has proposed to introduce an Indian Medical Graduate (IMG) degree from the year 2013, which will be conducted as national level examination to increase the credibility of medical practitioners.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) was planning to introduce two such examinations, one each for the undergraduates and postgraduates medical students. They also said that, the test will be similar to an ISI mark for doctors that would ensure good quality of service.
On Tuesday, MCI Governing body Chief Dr. S.K. Sarin said that, the IMG test will be conducted after two months of MBBS examination, so the undergraduate medical students can appear in this exam. He also said that currently, IMG test will be voluntary test and any graduate students would be able to take it between the years 2013 and 2016. MCI has also planned to make the test mandatory for medical students from the year 2017.
Medical Council of India (MCI), also planning to introduce a Master of Medicine (M.Med.) examination for postgraduate medical students. It will be two year course after MBBS degree.
Council has also proposed, the doctors who have obtained the Master of Medicine (M.Med) degree, will become specialists in the field of their choice. These graduated students will be trained to develop their clinical skills rather than basic research.
Council also said that medical students who would choose the M.Med, will able to do a six month long rural stint within the two-year timeframe of the course. Medical students will also be given additional 5% marks for Doctor of Medicine (MD) or a Doctor of Surgery (MS) degree.
Dr. S.K. Sarin said that, students usually missed their PG seat for Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Surgery (MS) degree by only one mark and giving them the 5% marks will provide them added advantages. MCI is also giving importance to the one-year compulsory internship, that students are required to do after completion of their MBBS examination.
With this special decision, the students will be graded on their internship performance with almost 50% of their MBBS marks, all were added to their IMG theory score.
