UGC Probe into Working of Deemed to be Universities

New Delhi: The Government has asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) to probe into the working of deemed to be Universities. The main objective of this review would be to check the availability of good infrastructure and teaching resources (faculty) in these institutions.
 
According to the sources, around 125 institutions which are deemed to be universities, had been inspected by 125 UGC Expert Committees. Each expert committee consisted of 5 (five) to 20 (twenty) members, including academics and nominees of the relevant statutory councils.
 
In order to take the review, these Committees carried out on-site inspections and pointed out 7 institutions lacking in infrastructure and 17 in faculty positions. However, in regard to research, the Committees had concluded that in most of the cases, there is need of improvement in overall research component.
 
Sources informed that this information was provided by Smt. D. Purandeswari, the Minister of State for Human Resource Development, in a written reply to a question, during session in Lok Sabha, recently.
