UGC Likely to Launch Degree in Vocational Studies in Affiliated Institutions

New Delhi: University Grants Commission (UGC), is all set to introduce a bachelor’s degree in vocational education in its affiliated institutions, all across the country. Reportedly, the proposed degree in vocational educations is most likely to be launched in 2012.

As per sources, the standing committee of UGC has formally approved a proposal to introduce the said course in a meeting held, recently. However, this is to get a final nod from the commission. Once approved, a college student can pick up a bachelors degree in art, science, commerce or vocational education.

While informing about the same, Ved Prakash, the acting Chairman of UGC said that the committee has proposed to add vocational education as one of the specific degrees of UGC from 2012. However, the advanced details are still being worked on.

Sources informed that the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) had earlier written a letter to UGC requesting them to introduce vocational education at college level. S S Mantha, AICTE Chairman confirmed that the curriculum of the new courses will be made available on the website by March 10.

Mantha also said that this will improve employment opportunities for college graduates. For the degree course, the student will have to choose a sector and a specific specialization from each sector, AICTE Chairman added. Initially 10 sectors have been chosen including tourism, construction, printing, telecom, IT, mobile and communication.

Mantha further added that under entertainment sector a student can opt for specialization in theatre/stage craft or western classical dancing or even acting. To begin with, the proposal is to have five sectors in each college. In addition, each sector can have a maximum of 100 students which means initially a college can have 500 students for vocational education, Mantha concluded.
