UGC To Introduce Disaster Management As A Subject in Universities

New Delhi: University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, is likely to introduce Disaster Management as an optional subject in all its affiliated universities across India. There are approximately 566 universities all across India recognized by UGC. The new course will be implemented in the curriculum in all undergraduate (UG) courses offered by them and their affiliated colleges.

According to sources, the UGC has circulated the formal circular regarding the new addition of disaster management in the curriculum to all the universities, recently. Also, the circular mentioned a model syllabus for the proposed subject for the universities to adopt and implement in classrooms. Sources also informed that the directive is a result of high priority of the Union Government for disaster management through structured educational programmes and professional training.

It is also informed that earlier in the year, UGC had appointed a four-member committee to suggest measures for promoting disaster management education in the university system. The directive is the result of committee’s suggestion that the disaster management should be a part of the orientation and refresher courses offered to teachers by the Academic Staff Colleges.
