HRD Minister advises to include sex education in school curriculum

New Delhi: M M Pallam Raju, the Cabinet Minister of India for Human Resources Development (HRD), has suggested that it’s high time, that sex education should be made a part of school curriculum. While answering to a query on Justice J S Verma Panel's recommendations for gender sensitization through education, the minister gave this comment, and said that, government has already started working on it.

Explaining more about the proposed change, Raju informed that these prospective changes would be discussed by the Centre with every state, keeping in mind the fact that each has its own different curriculum body. The minister went on to add, that he would also exchange his thoughts about the issue, with the chairperson of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

He further clarified, that adding sex education in school curriculums is not an easy decision, but still, the centre would its best to apply Justice Verma's recommendations. He further added that there are some prominent issues yet be reviewed about this inclusion, which include how the community would react to such a change, and what should be the proper age of students to study, such a topic.

After a minor named as one of the prime accused in the much talked about, Delhi gang rape case that occurred in December 2012, Justice J S Verma, the Chief Justice of India, formed a committee to suggest ways to make rape laws stronger and check crimes against women in the country. In its suggestions, the Verma’s committee had suggested that, proper sex education must be made an integral part of school curriculum to avoid such abhorrent incidents in future.
