HRD Minister Pallam Raju Announces a National Mission for Teachers

New Delhi: M.M. Pallam Raju, Cabinet Minister of India for Human Resources Development, has declared that the government would shortly launch a national teacher’s mission for maintaining the quality of education in schools. He affirmed the fact, that despite tremendous advances in technology, good teachers were required to provide quality education. He was addressing the One Globe Education Summit, focusing on South Asia, conducted at the national capital, quite recently.
 
He further informed that, keeping in view of the need for good teachers, this proposed national teacher's mission will address all issues related to teachers and teacher education, in a holistic manner, at all levels. Later, ministry officials explained that the mission would also suggest ways to support institutional mechanisms at all levels, so that there are vertical and lateral linkages, which could serve the community of teachers.
 
The minister also discussed about various other, upcoming educational strategies at the summit. He informed that during 11th Five Year Plan, the focus was on building and improving infrastructure for higher learning, which in turn helped in raising the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) from 10% to 15%. However, in the 12th Five Year Plan, the government would emphasize over the quality of the outcomes.
 
The HRD minister further affirmed that during the 12th Five Year Plan, aim of enrolling additional 10 million students, into schools as well as open and distant learning education has been made. He went on to add further that besides, assurance of good quality education to all, availability of good teaching staff, was also very important.
 
In the past few days repeatedly, the need of improving the country’s education system has been also pinpointed by the President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, at a conference of Vice-Chancellors of Central Universities held at the Rastrapati Bhavan.
