Legislative council approves bill allowing bifurcation of Bangalore University

Bangalore: The Legislative Council has approved the Karnataka State Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2013, to facilitate bifurcation of existing Bangalore University. The new University will be formed from affiliated colleges and Institutes that will be split from the existing setup. This bill was proposed recently by C T Ravi, the Minister for Higher Education, before the council.

Moving the bill, the minister explained that the number of colleges affiliated to Bangalore University have taken a rapid hike, which has greatly increased the workload of the varsity. This new University would definitely ease the burden of work of the former, as over 300 affiliated colleges will be shared between the two, he affirmed.

While replying to satisfy the concerns of the members of the house, over government’s exercise to divide colleges, Ravi clarified that a separate provision has been made in the bill, which would enable government to modify any of its rules by direct notification process. Hence, there is no need to formulate a new bill or amendment procedure. He went on to inform the house, that in the proposed bill, the colleges have been separated into two universities on geographical basis, carefully balancing the number of colleges and institutes.

As per sources, the new University would be named after renowned writer “Late Dr. DV Gundappa (DVG) and will be located in Hoskote taluk. Around 150 acre, of land has also been reserved for the same. However, for now the new university will function from the central college campus, for around five years, until all the necessary infrastructure is established in the proposed location.
