Bhubaneswar Institute of Technology Teams Up With US Firm

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Institute of Technology (BIT) has joined hands with the US chip-maker Cypress Semiconductor Corp. Soon, the US firm will set up a design technology laboratory within the institute premise and train its students. Ashok Mahapatra, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director of BIT, said that it will be the first programmable system on chip (PSoC) laboratory of the state. PSoC devices provide a learning platform for students in embedded design.

BIT is among the few select institutes in India and the first in Orissa to be part of the Cypress University Alliance programme. Other Indian institutions that are part of the programme are Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay, IIT-Delhi and Anna University.

In order to offer the programme a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in San Jose, US, on July 31, by Rabi Mahapatra, Chairman of BIT, and Patrick Kane, Director of Cypress University Alliance. As a part of the agreement, Cypress will provide hands-on training to the faculty and students of BIT in addition to free hardware kits and software tools valued at over $200,000.

Presently, BIT is planning to introduce PSoC training for its 120 students in Electronics & Communications Engineering (ECE), and Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) from 2009, in their first year itself. A two-semester course on PSoC has been planned at BIT, in which the course materials will be developed by the faculty of BIT in collaboration with Cypress.
