Deemed Universities in India to Continue With Affiliating Rights

New Delhi: HRD Ministry has not yet barred University Grants Commission (UGC) from continuing the process of bringing educational institutions under the domain of existing deemed universities though it has stopped fresh sanction of deemed university status.

Deemed universities are allowed bring institutes run by the same trust or group under its domain. The procedure is that once an institute of a trust is granted the status of deemed university, it approaches UGC so that other institutes run by the same trust could be affiliated to its deemed university. In the process, these institutions become affiliated to the deemed university run by the same trust. Moreover, the process has an added advantage of saving the management cost of affiliating to some other university.

HRD ministry has asked UGC to scrutinize ‘very carefully’ all the essential parameters like academic standards. Initially the meeting was scheduled for July 24 but sources have hinted that it could be postponed. To ensure that bringing institutions under the realm of deemed university should not be misinterpreted, the ministry has taken care to mention that “timeframe of three months given to UGC to complete the review of deemed universities must be adhered to”.
