Getting into IITs Becoming Tougher

New Delhi: From the session 2011 onwards, it will be a hard nut to crack for students aspiring to join the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs). As per sources, getting into IITs will become tougher, as the Government has decided to give weightage to class XII results, apart from the IIT Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) score.

Kapil Sibal, HRD Minister, has made an announcement after a meeting of IIT Council, that the minimum Class XII marks should be 80% to 85%. Presently, students having cleared IIT JEE should have a score of 60% in class XII. However, the final decision would be left to the IITs. The reform in admission is being done to check the mushrooming of coaching centres for IIT-JEE as well as the inclination among students not to take Class XII board examination seriously.

In addition, the HRD Ministry has appointed a three-member committee to look into the curriculum and reforms in JEE. The committee, which will give its report in three months, consists of Science and Technology Secretary - T Ramasamy, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology - M K Bhan and CSIR Director - General Samir Brahmachari.
