New Delhi: India Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) will award a total of 180 PhDs at its convocation next month. It is a great achievement for the institute as the figure is highest-ever for IIT-D.
As per the sources, last year, the number of graduating students stood at 147. Since 2006, when the number of PhDs stood at 134, a steady jump in doctorates awarded has also been noticed. Apart from that, the value of sponsored research at IIT-D has helped increase PhD enrollment here, which has lately become a talking point. Currently, there are 1,277 students enrolled in the PhD programme.
In the past few years, IIT Delhi has been trying its best to cement its reputation as a research institute and has taken various initiatives in this regard. Professor M. Balakrishnan, Dean, Post Graduate and Research Studies - IIT-D said that the institute has undergone changes in some policies and introduced a few new ones as well, to attract more PhD aspirants. The institute has also been providing partial financial support of Rs 20,000 per student for him or her to attend international conferences. In 2008-09, the institute undertook fresh projects to the tune of Rs 120 crore, against the approximately Rs 90 crore of 2007-08.
