IIT Delhi Invests Rs 1 Crore to Tighten Security

New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT - D) is all set to get better with the level of security with an investment of Rs 1 crore in next few months. As a part of safety measures, IIT – D plans to issue new identification cards to its nearly 5,500 students by the end of this year.

Captain B N Yadav, Security Officer, IIT-D, said that the new cards will act as a single admit card to the library, hostel and reading room. Instead of the present cards that act as their identity cards as well as the library card, this will put a check on the entry and exit of the outsiders in the academic areas. With the new safety measures adopted, the institute expects to overcome the menace of trespassers and petty thefts at the campus.

The process will include installation of close circuit television (CCTV) cameras, introducing electronic access system in hostels, academic areas such as library, reading room and canteen. The surveillance at all the five entry gates of the campus by 17 CCTV cameras will ensure that the 325 acres of the campus which is quite permeable to the people from the neighboring villages cannot be easily breached.

Surendra Prasad, Director, IIT-D, said that the step is taken due to the increasing number of population in the campus. It is an educational campus, and practically it is not possible to keep a vigil on all those entering or leaving the campus. The new measures will help in safeguarding the campus.
