New Delhi: IIT JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) is scheduled to be conducted on April 12, 2009 (Sunday) for admissions to the undergraduate programs offered at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) group of institutes, spread across India. About 3.95 lakh students will appear for IIT JEE this Sunday to compete for the 7300 seats (approx) available. In Mumbai, approximately 7300 students will be appearing for JEE in 20 centers across Mumbai. As per the records, 3.11 lakh students appeared the exam last year.
In total, there are 15 institutes in the league of IITs located at Bhubaneswar, Bombay, Delhi, Chennai, Roorkee, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Patna, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Indore and Rajasthan, along with Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, and Indian School of Mines University (ISMU), Dhanbad, and all of these institutes gives admission strictly on the basis of JEE scores.
In 2009, there is an increase in the number of seats due to the addition of new IITs in the league at Himachal Pradesh and Indore. Another prime reason is Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation policy adopted by the IIT group, and the seat to student ratio 1: 54. IIT Himachal Pradesh and Indore offer BTech in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, approximately 120 seats are available in each of them. There will be 27 per cent OBC reservation, 15 per cent reservation for Scheduled Caste (SC) and 7.5 per cent reservation for Scheduled Tribes (ST) in each of the new IITs. 18 per cent of the seats in IITs Bombay, Delhi, Chennai, Guwahati, Roorkee, Kharagpur and Kanpur, will be reserved for OBC candidates.
