Kharagpur: Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp) is likely to increase its student intake from 8,000 to 20,000, by 2020. As per the sources, the decision to increase intake capacity involves an investment of about Rs 1,800 crore.
B Muthuraman, Chairman - Board Governors of IIT-Kgp, said that the expansion will take place in two phases. The first phase envisages increasing intake capacity to 11,000 at an investment of Rs 800 crore, by 2011-12. The second phase includes enhancing seats to 20,000 at an additional investment of about Rs 1,000 crore.
IIT-Kgp also plans to set up a medical college including a 300-750 bed hospital.Damodar Acharya, Director of IIT-Kgp, said that the hospital will be set up in association with a private partner. He further mentions that it will be taking help of the University of California, San Diego.
