Mumbai and Pune Universities to be Split

Mumbai: Maharashtra Government is serious contemplating to split Mumbai and Pune universities for improving managerial efficiency. As per the sources, the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) has proposed this to the state government to promote academic excellence in teaching and research and relieving them of the task of running undergrad colleges.

The Commission, set by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has proposed the formation of Undergraduation Board to bifurcate undergraduate colleges from the Universities. This would help the universities to focus on excellent teaching and research programs effectively. Mumbai University has hundreds of colleges under its jurisdiction from at least five districts and Pune University in three districts. Thus, these Universities are burdened with too much of administrative exercise and making it more unmanageable day by day.

NKC proposals are yet to be accepted by the Centre. However, it is felt that, the proposal of NKC has come as a great relief for the Universities. Once implemented it is sure to encourage high quality teaching and research in universities like many of the developed nations.
