Mumbai: Higher Education Department, Maharashtrahas received proposals from Universities across the state to start 2,046 new colleges. Varsities across the state are feeling the dearth of educational institutes to accommodate the increasing number of students aspiring for higher education.
R V Kirdak, Director of Higher Education, Government of Maharashtra, said that the proposals have been forwarded to the government for consideration. But not all the proposals are likely to be sanctioned. He also said that the final decision would be taken by the government as per the need and demand. Each division under a particular faculty in a college can have 120 seats. As per the record, this year around 11, 84,000 students from Maharashtra appeared for HSC, of which 2, 64,063 have taken the exams from the Mumbai division.
This year under Mumbai University, the proposals for setting up new colleges as well as additional divisions for 2009-10 add up to 28,254 seats. 145 proposals for new colleges have been made, amounting to 17,371 seats.
