New MBA & MCA Colleges in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has granted its approval to the managements of 18 institutions to offer Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the new academic session 2009-10. In addition, it has sanctioned three institutions which will offer Masters in Computer Applications (MCA) and two pharmacy colleges.

As per the sources, the self-financing MBA colleges will come up in Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Salem, Nagapattinam, Namakkal, Erode, Thanjavur, Villupuram, Perambalur and Pudukkottai. The letter of intents for establishing these institutions were issued over the past two months. Thus, the number of standalone management colleges in the state will go up to 34. Moreover, 161 self-financing engineering and arts and science colleges in Tamil Nadu offer the MBA program. None of the government college offers MBA, only a single government aided institution has 180 seats in its MBA course. Last year, 178 colleges had admitted 11,445 students in the MBA program, while the sanctioned student intake in these institutions was 12,150.

There would be an addition of 13 standalone institutions that would offer MCA. In the academic session 2008-09, as many as 8,430 students had enrolled for the MCA course in 169 colleges, including two government colleges, three government-aided institutions, 154 self-financing colleges and 10 standalone institutions. Cumulative, these institutions have 12,085 seats.

This year nearly 95,000 aspirants had applied for the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test to be conducted by the Anna University (Chennai) later this month. There is an increase of 25000 more applicants compared to the previous year. Appearing in the TANCET is a mandatory requirement for admission into MBA, MCA, ME/M Tech in the state. A scrutiny of the TANCET applications showed that nearly 55000 candidates have applied for the entrance test for MBA.

Only 35,000 applications were received from MBA aspirants last year. In contrast, the number of applications for the MCA entrance test has dropped from 25,000 last year to 20,000 this year. The reason behind the decrease in the number of MCA applicants is the slowdown in the software and Information Technology industry.
