Tamil Nadu: Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam, in a press conference, said that the new government medical colleges in the Villupuram and Tiruvarur of Tamil Nadu (TN) would start functioning form the upcoming session.
Mr Panneerselvam mentioned that these colleges would have contemporary amenities, which would serve the students pursuing medical degree. He further said that the work has commendably progressed at the Villupuram Medical College in the past six months, inspite of the obstruction caused by the court cases. Since it is expected that the construction would finish by March 2010, the college would soon be inviting applications for the first year MBBS programme, after seeking permission from the Medical Council of India (MCI).
As per sources, the allocation of funds for constructing the college at Villupuram has been divided into three phases. The first phase of work involves a cost of Rs 58 lakh, out of which 90% has been complete. The second phase has Rs 35 crore in its treasury, which has been already put-aside, while for the last phase, Rs 23 crore has been allocated.
