No Fee Hike in Karnataka Colleges

Good news for students seeking admission into the admission to medical, dental and engineering colleges in Karnataka as the Karnataka government and private professional colleges associations have resolved to retain the same old fee structure for the third successive year. On April 15, 2009, separate applications were moved in this regard by Karnataka State Government, the Karnataka Private Medical Colleges’ Association (KPMCA) and the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMED - K) before the Supreme Court.

COMED-K and Karnataka Private Medical Colleges’ Association submitted that they would follow previous year fee structure. The allotment of postgraduate medical and dental seats in their member colleges would also be done accordingly. A state government counsel also mentioned that PGET-09 would be followed to prevent litigation arising in the matter of agreement between the government and the associations on seat sharing formula as well as fee structure.

As per the new agreement, 33 per cent of seats are set apart for the government quota, and would be offered to students with 33 per cent fee concession. 67 per cent of seats, out of the total intake of 100 per cent would remain with the management of private institutions/COMED-K. Moreover, 47 per cent seats would be reserved for general candidates,17 per cent for students from Karnataka from the all-India merit list, 30 per cent for candidates on the basis of the all-India merit list prepared COMED-K and 20 per cent for Non Resident Indian or NRI-sponsored students.

Karnataka Professional Educational Institutes (Regulation of Admission and Fixation of Fees) (Special Provisions) Act, 2006, offers government with the right to negotiate a consensual agreement with the association and private medical colleges for sharing of seats and fixing a fee structure.
