Recession Hit Engineering Graduates Turn Towards Government Jobs

Vellore: Kasi Viswanathan, Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Public Services Commission (TNPSC), said that for the first time, 11515 engineering graduates had taken up the preliminary objective type Group I exam, conducted across the state on Sunday. Ever year, the number of engineering students appearing for the exam is between 1000 and 2000. As per Viswanathan, the number of candidates has gone up mainly due to the widespread economic downturn.
 
The Group I exam was conducted for 82 vacancies, of which 14 were for the post of deputy collectors in the Revenue Department, 29 for the post of deputy registrars for the Cooperative Department, 29 for the post of assistant directors for the Department of Rural Development and the rest 10 were for the post of district employment officers for the Department of Employment and Training. As per the records, 55456 male and 29908 female candidates had applied for the 82 vacancies and 79261 of them wrote the exam this year. In the Vellore district alone, about 2660 students appeared for the exams.
 
After the exam, a total of 820 candidates would be selected for the second level main written exam, making the success ratio 1:10. Out of this, 164 would be selected for the final interview, making the success ratio 1:2. About 31 per cent of the reservations are meant for the general category, 26.5 for BC, 20 for MBC, 18 for SC, 3.5 for Muslim candidates and one per cent for ST candidates. Rest of the 30 per cent reservation for all posts would be given to women candidates, of which five per cent would be for widows.
