New Delhi: Delhi University’s (DU) has made the announcement of introducing semester system from the upcoming academic session 2010-11. The semester system is already being followed at some universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
A section of the teaching society was not in favor of introducing the semester system at the DU. Therefore, the university was following the annual academic session since its inception in 1922. The resolution to introduce semester system at undergraduate level in the university was passed recently. The change has been recommended by both the National Knowledge Commission and the University Grants Commission (UGC).
With the introduction of semester system, students can easily switch to another college after a semester. Deepak Pental, Vice Chancellor DU, in his statement mentioned that an expected outcome to the semester system will be a credits system. Students will be given credits for particular papers in semester system. A certain minimum number of credits will be necessary before a student can graduate.
Moreover, the UGC also wants to implement the semester system across the colleges and universities in the country to facilitate easier migration of students and faculty by 2012.
