New Delhi: University Grants Commission (UGC) has submitted a commendation to the Ministry of HRD laying stress on the need of regular monitoring the working of deemed universities. The apex body has recommended mandatory accreditation for them.
As per the sources, the UGC recommendation states that it must be essential for an institution to have accreditation by either National Board of Accreditation (NBA) or National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) for being given the status of a deemed university. The commission has set a number of quality parameters like teacher student ratio and other facilities. Presently accreditation is not obligatory for deemed universities.
The UGC has suggested the deemed universities to maintain a teacher-student ratio of one to 20 for general courses. These guidelines have been framed by the UGC after it received a number of accusations about these institutions resorting to corrupt practices.
