Allahabad: Students of Allahabad University have initiated a virtual school for teaching poor children. The classrooms of the virtual school are functioning in the rooms of the hostel, of the university. Pramod Sharma, Research Scholar at the university, said that they get a unique sense of satisfaction while teaching poor students. They are not doing any extraordinary job; it's actually their social responsibility.
Further, Mr. Sharma added that of the 30 children, some are involved in garbage collection while others sell vegetables and other items on the roadside to earn a livelihood. As per sources, the students residing in the hostel will teach Hindi and English alphabets to these children. In addition, they will teach mathematical calculations and put stress on moral teachings.
Moreover, sources told that presently, 13 students, mostly research scholars staying in the Hindu Hostel, are involved in the noble exercise. Furthermore, Mr. Sharma told that with regular interactions, he gradually developed a kind of bonding with them. It was then that he decided to teach them. He actually wanted to do something constructive for them and thought that education would be the best tool for that.
Further, sources informed that the classes for poor children will be held thrice a week. The classes commence in the evening from 5.00 pm. Duration of the class will be of two hours. Jeetu Kumar, a child who lives nearby slum said that they really enjoy coming there. After their classes get over, 'bhaiyaas' play with them different indoor games.
Dhananjay Yadav, another student of Allahabad University, told the sources that besides teaching the students, they also provide them stationery items, toys and other gifts to keep their interest in education alive. In addition, he said that they would be living in a totally different world if the students of other varsities also took up the job of teaching poor children. If it happens, they would in a real sense be fighting illiteracy.
