Aligarh: The Department of Political Science at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) celebrated Human Rights Day. The programme was organized at the Arts Faculty Lounge. The keynote address at the function was delivered by the Department of Political Science Chairman A. R. Vijapur.
During his lecture, Prof. Vijapur elaborated the importance of Human Rights and the role of students in bringing about a change in the society. He cited common examples of human rights violations and stressed that the rights and duties go hand in hand. In addition, Dr. Arshi Khan of the Department addressed the issues of plights of minorities, while a student of BA Final, Haq Nawaz spoke on and underlined the ambiguities of existing system of human rights in the USA.
Besides, a resolution was also passed during the occasion, which urges the government that human rights should be taught as a mandatory foundation course in all schools and colleges.
Moreover, according to the resolution, District Human Rights Officers should be appointed in every district, National Commission for Minorities should be provided the power of investigation and enquiry, a judicial commission should be appointed to probe the cases of bomb blasts since 1998, the cases of corruption should be termed as gross violation of human rights and law should be made for uniform compensation to the victims of caste and communal violence.
