Tirunelveli: Anna University (AU) in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, will be offering a new four-year undergraduate programme namely Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Geo Informatics, from the academic session 2010. The University has launched the programme keeping in view the demand for young and qualified technocrats in organizations involving space research and allied fields. Moreover, the demand for this course is being speculated to be quite high. AU is the first in the city of Chennai to offer this course, apart from its earlier two-year M.Tech and PhD programmes in the field.
S. Kaliappan, Vice Chancellor of AU, said that the decision to launch the course was taken after senior scientists working at high end research facilities such as Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Bangalore, and National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) Hyderabad observed the dedication and sincerity of M.Tech Geo Informatics students, while working at projects at these facilities. He said that that they have designed a world class curriculum for the course that will be taught at Palayamkottai, Nagercoil and Tuticorin, which will admit 120 students each.
Furthermore, Dr Kaliappan also added that the existing sophisticated infrastructure of the university would be an added advantage. Also, the students applying for the course will get to experiment using high tech gadgets that are used all over the world in large organizations dedicated to space research.
