Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani student, Ms Jyoti Arya has bagged the best undergraduate student award at the 9th Annual Wireless Telecommunication Symposium (WTS), held at Tampa, Florida, US. The 9th Annual WTS was held on April 21-23, 2010. Jyoti received the award from Mr Steven Powell, General Chair, Wireless Telecommunication Symposium.

Ms Jyoti Arya is a final year student of EEE at BITS Pilani. The title of her paper was “Unified 3GPP and 3GPP2 Turbo Encoder Using Runtime Partial Reconfiguration”. Ms Jyoti, co-authored this paper with Mr Rishi Mathur, another BITSian and Dr Shikha Tripathi, her project guide.

This paper was all about developing a common turbo encoder for 3GPP and 3GPP2, which are the two main technologies in 3G wireless communication. Recently, there has been a demand for development of single handsets, which support all wireless communication standards used globally. It was discovered that Jyoti’s research is an important step in this direction.

WTS is a yearly meeting covering progress in mobile communications and wireless networking technology, management, policy, applications and security. In WTS 2010, 52 papers were submitted from various countries including US, UK, Taiwan, France, China, Iran, Finland etc. Jyoti’s was the only paper from India in WTU Conference.
