New Delhi: On Wednesday i.e. February 24, 2010, a report was submitted to the Lok Sabha, informing that some of the deemed universities likely to face blacklisting are like family-run institutions. The report was submitted by an expert committee appointed by Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry to look into the matter. As per sources, it is the first time, the HRD ministry has explained the reason behind its effort to blacklist 44 deemed universities across India. However, the case is currently pending before the Supreme Court.
Kapil Sibal, in a written reply, has mentioned that in respect of these 44 deemed institutions, the review committee had found family controlled management architecture, unrelated academic programmes and deviation from the original mandate of grant of ‘deemed to be university’ status. He also added that lack of evidence of quality research, and that freedom and flexibility in matters of admission, intake capacity, programmes and fee structure had not been exercised in a responsible manner.
