Central Government Mulls Over Common Exit Exam for Medical Graduates

New Delhi: On November 16, 2010, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said that the central government is mulling over to conduct common exit exam for medical graduates based upon the suggestions of the Medical Council of India (MCI). Further, he said that the common exit exam has been suggested by the task force constituted for creation of an overarching body for medical education, the National Commission for Human Resources for Health. He said this in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

In addition to the written reply, Mr. Azad said that the central government had constituted a task force to recommend for creation of an overarching regulatory body in inter-related fields of medicine viz. National Commission for Human Resources for Health (NCHRH). Furthermore, he told that the task force, after consultations with the stakeholders, including the MCI, in its report has suggested an exit test for medical graduates to improve the standards of medical education in the country. As per Ministry sources, the exit exam will be similar to the exit exams conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI) for law graduates.
