Bangalore: Central University of Karnataka (CUK) is likely to launch the construction of its Rs 142-crore campus at Gulbarga, later this year. CUK is one of the 15 University Grants Commission (UGC) funded universities that came up last year to provide quality education in less developed regions of Karnataka.
As per sources, the Karnataka Government has given 621 acres of land for CUK on Gulbarga-Waghdhari highway near Gulbarga in the backward Hyderabad-Karnataka region. Moreover, project management consultants and architectural consultants have also been selected. Presently, the CUK, operating from the Gulbarga University campus, would be shifted within one year of start of construction.
A M Pathan, Vice Chancellor (VC) of CUK, said that in the first year the university had launched five post-graduate programmes. He said in the first year, 43 students were studying in the University and during the coming academic year, for which admission notification is to be issued in the first week of April 2010, more would be admitted. Admissions would be done on all-India basis through an entrance test.
Mr Pathan also mentioned about the plans to strengthen the faculty by hiring experienced hands from India and abroad. He further said that CUK was also working with three Canada-based universities in framing curricula for new courses to be introduced in phases from the coming academic year. The University will introduce courses in niche and new areas, and it was the only university in Karnataka offering PG programme in Geospatial Applications in Regional Development.
