The Central government has proposed setting up of an independent institute of Nano Science and Technology in Mohali. The proposal also includes supporting a centre for Nano Science and Technology as part of an existing Bangalore institute. This new centre will take up research on novel nano-materials.
According to Prithviraj Chavan, the Minister of State for Science and Technology, the new center at Mohali will be established by May 2010. The government is willing to spend Rs.113 crore for building this centre. However, the project is still to receive the sanction from the government, before the funds are released for the project to get started.
As of now, the government is supporting seven centers for Nano technology within the country in different institutions. Once the new centre comes up at Mohali, India will have a total of 8 centrally-funded institutions on Nano technology.
