Eight New Medical Colleges to Be Set Up in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: The Government of Gujarat has decided to establish 8 new medical colleges in the state in the next two years, despite the rejection of its proposals by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas has said that the state government is going to set up eight new medical colleges that also include those three colleges, which were rejected by the MCI earlier. The medical colleges are proposed to set up at Sola in Ahmedabad, Gotri in Vadodara, K.J. Mehta Medical College in Bhavnagar, in Patan and Valsad. The location of the remaining three colleges would be decided soon. He is hoping that if not this year, MCI would approve colleges in the next year.

Vyas added that the MCI had granted permission to the two colleges earlier, under the chairmanship of Ketan Desai, but the decision on the third was pending due the necessary inspections of MCI team.

After the arrest of Desai, the previous permissions to the two colleges were taken back, which led to the fresh inspection by a new team, which rejected the proposals. At the moment, the Council has only approved Adani Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhuj with a capacity of 150-seats.
