Dharamshala: On Thursday i.e. December 9, 2010, Himachal Pradesh has passed a law to control private universities so as to maintain quality and standards of education. As per sources, Himachal Pradesh has become the first Indian state to do so.
Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister said that the law would show the way to the rest of the country as it's a landmark legislation to maintain the quality and standard of education in private institutions. Sources informed that I D Dhiman, Education Minister, has presented the Private Education Institutions (Regularity Commission) Bill.
Further, sources informed that the bill was passed by a voice vote after it was presented for discussion in the Assembly. Mr. Dhiman said that the bill would help keep tabs on the working of private universities. He said this while presenting the bill. Further, he added that on request of the opposition members the bill was sent to a select committee represented by the members of ruling and opposition parties during the monsoon session on August 23.
As per sources, Kaul Singh, Opposition Congress legislator demands for a member of University Grants Commission (UGC) to be included in the proposed regulatory commission in order to keep it updated with latest UGC norms. Mr. Dhiman said that the bill had been examined by the select committee, which took care of objections raised by the opposition. He said this while rejecting the demand of Mr. Singh.
