HRD Minister Proposes New Guidelines for SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)

New Delhi: Human Resource Development (HRD) Minster Kapil Sibal in his quest to revamp the education system of the nation adopted numerous measures. Presently, Sibal is mulling over a national level entrance examination for admission to colleges like that of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) in the US. As per sources, the HRD minister discussed the idea in a meeting with the school principals and university Vice Chancellors conducted recently.

During the meeting, other agendas were also discussed such as finding techniques to improve the interaction between the school and university system. The meeting aimed at discussing common core curriculum in the science, commerce and economics at Higher Secondary level, the possibility of grading and Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) at +2 level, inter-board comparability of results and a facilitative continuity marking the shift from school to college.

Further, the meeting discussed the ways in which students have to appear for a large number of entrance exams to get admission into undergraduate programmes in engineering, medical sciences, law or even for general science, humanities and commerce streams, in reputed institutions. The decision has been thought over to reduce stress on students due to multiplicity of entrance tests and their clashing dates. Moreover, the meeting has suggested that a SAT-type national-level entrance test with national percentile score in different subjects may be considered.
