New Delhi: Today i.e. on May 7, 2010, Rajya Sabha was informed about the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry’s decision to restore the MPs' quota for admission of students in Kendriya Vidyalayas.
HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said the decision was taken at a meeting of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathana on Thursday. He added that the ministry has decided to restore two nominations to each MP, but he has surrendered both the minister quota and the MP quota for himself.
The MPs can nominate two students from certain sections of the society to Kendriya Vidyalayas. The government had abolished the quota after the enactment of Right to Education Act in April that reserves 25 percent seats in schools for local students.
As per sources, the quota of admission for candidates recommended by MPs was started during the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, but was withdrawn after anomalies were noticed. However, the demand for restoring the quota was echoed strongly by members of both the houses during the last two weeks.
