IITs Get Court Notice Over Discrepancy On JEE

New Delhi: Delhi High Court (HC) has issued notices to 15 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Human Resource Development Ministry to elucidate their process of selection through the annual IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) – IIT JEE.

Delhi High Court ruling based on the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Rajeev Kumar, Professor from IIT-Kharagpur. In his PIL, Kumar has demanded an independent investigation into the irregularities of the 2006 IIT-Joint Entrance Examination that led to 994 deserving candidates losing out on seats.

Mr Kumar has told that the IIT-JEE selection procedure is a fraud. He added that he has been fighting against it for four years and finally the Delhi High Court has issued notice to the ministry, the IIT council and the Joint Admission Board that conducts the entrance. He also added that the entrance in its current format is not transparent. No one knows how IITs select the candidates.

Further, Mr Kumar mentioned that though Kolkata High Court dismissed his PIL, he moved to the Delhi High Court. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, who is fighting the case on behalf of Kumar, said that the court has asked the three parties to reply by mid May.

Every year, thousands of students appear for IIT- JEE in order to seek a seat in the elite technology schools. Currently, India has 15 IITs including the eight new ones who have started operation in the last two years. As per sources, this year, over 400,000 students will appear in the IIT-JEE scheduled to be held on April 11, 2010.
