India Lacks 1.2 Million Teachers Says HRD Minister

New Delhi: Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal has said that there is a shortage of 1.2 million teachers in India and suggested that states must speed up the recruitment procedure to bridge the gap.

As per sources, on Friday i.e. August 6, 2010, Mr Sibal told the Rajya Sabha during a question hour that there is a dearth of 1.2 million teachers. In addition, in some states there is an enormous backlog from last several years. He also mentioned that about 100,696 posts are still lying vacant in Bihar. Therefore, he suggested that there is a need to speed up the recruitment process.

Mr Sibal said that in some states, the Ministry has found that all deployment (of teachers) is done in one school, while there are no teachers in others. It is essential to redeploy teachers so that there is equal distribution of teachers.  Moreover, he voiced concern over the lack of enough quality institutions to train teachers.

Furthermore, he added that the problem is that not enough students opt for Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course. Also, the nation lack quality training institutions, which is adding to the problem.  He said that there is a need to make the profession of teaching attractive by giving incentives like insurance, housing and healthcare facilities. He also mentioned that across the world, the best minds opt for teaching profession but this is not happening in India. So, there is need to give them more incentives.
