New Delhi: According to the officials, Radha Charan Gupta has been selected for the prestigious Kenneth O. May Prize for the History of Mathematics due to his contribution in Mathematics. He is a retired mathematics professor.
Gupta has been selected for his work on the history of development of trigonometry in India. He is the first Indian to receive such award, which will be given to him at International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) to be held (for the first time in India), in Hyderabad from Aug 19-27. President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil will inaugurate the Congress.
Moreover, it is expected that around 3000 delegates across the world will gather in Hyderabad to make it biggest international event of mathematicians in the world.
The award, which is named after mathematician and historian Kenneth O. May (founder of the International Commission for the History of Mathematics), consists of a bronze medal given in four years to the best scholarly work in the subject.
