New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) are adding and scrapping the list of courses in their curriculum as the admission procedure starts for the new session.
Both the JMI and GGSIPU have planned to begin two new professional courses from this year in Tourism and Management, while the Academic Council of JMI, after a heated debate over the discontinuation of BA (Pass) course came out with an undisputed decision to do away with the course for the time being.
Avinash Sharma, Director of Academic Affairs at GGSIPU, announced that the new professional courses introduced would be Bachelors in Business Management with specialization in international business and Bachelors in Modern Office Management.
The course that has been introduced by JMI is a three-year degree course in Tourism and Hospitality Management, for which, around 30 students would be admitted. The decision to temporarily suspend the course was taken during a meeting of the Academic Council on April 5. The university will work towards restructuring the course.
Simi Malhotra, Media Coordinator for JMI has said that the BA Pass programme that the university had been offering till now was not modern enough to suit the requirements of the present day students, as it offered no specialization in any field. The criteria for admission to the course, for which around 1,500 students had applied last year, was at least 45 percent in Class XII and a written exam and interview by the university.
The university had already begun the sales of forms before this decision and has now issued a corrigendum to inform students that the form fee can be refunded from the Department of Social Sciences. The 195 seats that had been allotted to the BA Pass course will now be distributed among other courses.
The overhauling is garnered with mixed reactions, however, it has been appreciated by the university faculty, whereas some students have been disappointed and are even preparing to submit a petition to reinstate the course.
